From a very young child Mum always told us to dab baking soda on any mouth ulcer - works amazingly. Use it to clean your teeth as well - we did as kids.
Just an aside on this - I now use Cold Power washing powder with BAKING SODA - works fantastically on the clothes. Cold Power is an Australian product - not sure if you have it overseas - my mother in law always used to take it back to England when she came over as it was not available there.

Hi, downunder
I use washing soda too. You can buy it in most grocery stores here.
I use a sprinkle of baking Soda to clean in place of scouring powders like Comment and Ajax. It works just as good and is safe and cheap.
I use it as a mouth rinse too. I had a problem about a year ago with unusual symptoms in my mouth and these rinses cleared it up very well.
