In the beginning, I realized that glowing lint or fiber makes me feel like bugs are biting, pinching or crawling under my skin.
Some things glow that don't bite, and some things bite that don't glow. But the 'glowing lint rule' is a good basic premise to start one's ammonia-fied journey with.
I began realizing how irritating our newer all-cotton bedding is and started eliminating it. It's coarse and rough to the touch and continues to "bite" me even though they've met with Mr. Ammonia several times.
If I lay still in bed, I can feel something move and tickle me on the surface of my skin and then the biting starts, so I started looking closer at this problem.
I started using the older cotton-blend bedding, black-light-checking before putting on bed. It's been wonderful - er - for a few days - then I feel them moving in again, even though I started a strict regimen of showering thoroughly and going straight to bed.
Also, I make the bed the minute it's vacated, keeping the sheets/pillows covered. When changing sheets, I handle them like toxic waste - ROTF - avoiding any unnecessary handling or stirring up "dust," taking them straight for a spin with Mr. Ammonia. And I keep the furniture dusted and carpet vacuumed.
Returning late from a trip, I couldn't wait to shower and sleep. I was horrified when I walked in to see my side of the bed unmade, with everything exposed and the ceiling fan whirring. I took the high road and climbed in, since my spouse saw my horrification and was ready to unleash about my "obsession" with lint.
About a minute later, the biting started. I got up and started ripping the bedding off, looking so disgusted that the spousal unit kept his mouth shut.
You guys - please help me figure this next part out. I'm stumped.
The fitted sheet was dark - easy to see lint on. As I removed the bedspread and top sheet, I noticed the bottom half of the fitted sheet looked dusty. I looked closer and saw white specks and fine dust - everywhere.
They were heaviest at foot of bed, up to about thigh level. Now this area is most covered, least open to "infestation." And the top sheet did not have all of the dust on it - it was dark too, close to the same fabric content but a different brand,
I got the black light. OMG, a glowing farm! The white specks, under magnifying glass, may be dead skin cells. Then there was the fiber dust. I dabbed up some with clear tape for microscope exploration later. They were really too small and fine to gather any other way.
What on earth could this be? If it is dead skin from feet or legs, it glows. If I am picking it up outside, it's clinging even through the shower routine. Has anyone with biting sheets looked in-depth at what's going on?
Will I begin glowing in the dark? Just kidding - I think.
When I get the time, I'll pull out the scope and post if I find anything interesting. Thanks!!
