I feel sorry for medical doctors these days. Can med school can keep up with Frankenscience?
Do we even know if there is just one kind of Morgs? One source? What about different types or sources, with similar symptoms? Are we sure it is contaigous from our bodies or is it fiber hitchikers clinging with tenacity, that you can even get while shopping. The questions are endless. Boy, Dr. Wymore's list must be quite a wild read.
But we Morgies may be the luckier of some, since the marriage of a plant and a nematode is just one speck in the whole bio-vat of lizards and toads being cooked up. There's no telling what other things crawl out of the bubbling cauldron, and who they will select, affect or infect. It may never be more important to perpetually work on being healthy than right now. Some examples:
1. Listeria and Biophaged Food. (On news yesterday)
FDA just OK'd a new "good virus" to be sprayed on many of our foods - poultry, lunch meat, hot dogs and soft cheeses - to stop Liseria - 500 deaths and 2,000 ill yearly. The food label will say "biophaged" on it. (Will people actually willingly buy this stuff? Hey - maybe the virus will eat up the nematodes! Or what if it starts dating the nematodes? Yikes.)
Listeria is caused mainly from improper food handling - not washing hands, keeping at wrong temp, etc. But good grief!! This is a major problem!!! So we're all going to be fed a virus because some folks don't have any d**ned sense. I wonder how much that venture cost? Oh yeah, sale of the virus will recoup the initial outlay, plus a little extra.
2. Senator asks, "What if you get nanos in your skin?"
A while back, a Senate committee discussed the fact that tech is way ahead of the curve and the legislators aren't keeping up with it. It was being argued that things are being created with no rules governing them and this new kind of science sorely needs new rules (including ethics).
They were discussing nanotechnology. I think it was Diane Feinstein that asked about invisible nano dust, about spreading it under the bed to get rid of dust bunnies. She asked, first, where do the dust bunnies go when the nano "beams them up?"
Second, what happens if someone steps in the nano dust and it's absorbed into their skin? We're making these things and no one is even doing the "What If" test!! There was a suggestion that a "common joe" from the streets be added to a panel to pose "What If" scenarios. I don't know what outcome was - probably nothing.
3. Ill family has residue analyzed at lab.
Then there's the ill family who got a response from their senator, regarding chem spraying. Then they had a lab analyze the residue in their home and vehicles. As an optimist I would say, "Maybe they're spraying to kill the Morgs bug." I hope so. But, cancers, viruses, bacteria and sedatives, among much more?
4. Farmers not allowed to plant last year's seed.
This Canadian documentary was about irate farmers, bioengineering and crops. Do you know that farmers cannot plant seed from the previous harvest? This is serious business - Pinkerton security people watch the farms to make sure no one cheats. They are forced to buy new seed every year. No wonder tomatoes taste like nothing, now!! I told my husband those 3-lb artichokes couldn't be normal!!
Plus, GM crops are being grown in open fields, thereby mixing with other crops that were not GM'ed. There's no way to stop it from happening. There is a seed bank where samples of all heirloom seed is kept, and the contents of that bank are being destroyed so that only this "new food" is available..
5. Farmers commit suicide in India. (On news yesterday)
Over 17,000 farmers in India committed suicide in one year because they are being forced into these seed deals, forced to take out huge loans, forced out by the big bio-ag companies and "globalizing."
The only thing that comes to mind is a quote; "Oh God, what hath thou wrought?" (Forgive me if I got the quote incorrectly - I'm rusty.)
I think this whole world is in for a bumpy ride...fasten those seatbelts! Maybe we're lucky to get the heads up early!
